May 11, 2017 (Cuyamaca) – Debbie Ekhaml shot this beautiful photo of a California gray fox in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. The gray fox can run up to 28 miles an hour and is the only species of canines in North America that can actually climb trees!
They are smaller than coyotes and eat birds, insects, berries, small rodents and rabbits. With a rusty-red front, white throat, grizzled grey coat and black-tipped bushy tail, they are among the most beautiful wildlife species found in our region – both in mountain areas and some suburban communities.
Foxes are noted for their intelligence and cunning. Native American cultures have many legends about foxes, which are generally viewed as benevolent spirits. According to some tribal tales, the fox took fire from heaven to bestow it upon humankind.
